What Microphone Do You Use?

Post by TomBobBlender » Sun Jul 25, 2010 5:09 pm

From hearing so many different people through co-hosting and Skype interviews, we get all kinds of different sounds. That's because we all use different mics, and not all mics are created equal. What kind of microphone do you use? Where did you buy it? How much was it? What would you rate this particular mic?

I use my (sort of) overpriced g35s. Heavy on my head, but great sound otherwise. And the mic does an okay job of filtering out background noise.

They cost too much, if you ask me, but I have them now. 8/10

Well, I'm not much of the guy who buys all those super equipments for computers... But I have a Logitech stick mic... It does the job, for me! Clears out background noise and such... And it was 30 bucks. I'd give it an 8/10. Why 8/10? It uses up so much space :U

Professional Mic

Mic: Behringer USB C-1U Mic
Place of Purchase: Specialist DJ Store
Price: £60/$/
Description: A professional microphone which comes with an attachment so you can put it on a proper stand. Comes with software for mac nad PC but will run as soon as you plug the usb. No hassle with noise at all..
Rating: 8/10 - It is a fairly decent microphone but is a bit on the pricy side and also hard to come by.

Non Professional Mic

Mic: Labitech Desktop Mic
Place of Purchase: Maplin
Price: £10/$/
Description: A normal desktop mic which comes with a mute button built in. Stands normally without use of sticky pads or clipping it onto the stand
Rating: 5.5/10 - Again this is a fairly decent mic, however, like most desktop microphones, it doesn't have good noise reduction and generally picks up any background noise loud enough including PC fans. Other than that, this mic is good for Skype conversations and talking.

Another mic I would recommend is the Trust MC‑1200 Mic.

I own the godly Mic on a Stick. It is nearing 15 years old and was free when I first got it. It is the only mic I have ever used for cohosting and remains to this day a mic that is so sensitive it picks up my quiet typing as being overly loud. It is no longer in production and those that look like it now are crummy.

Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto

I use my built-in Mic in my Mac (which the engineers stupidly put too close to the speakers, forcing me to use headphones when I was on Mumble one time). I do have a Motorola Bluetooth device I can try out next time I decide to wanna try and join the call

I use one that, according to you Tom, sounds like I'm in the shower. Needless to say I need a new one.

I use an old Logitech Headset that i bought from Gamestop for 20 dollars. I bought it so i could use it for Call of Duty 3 on the ps2. It still works great and it has better quality than the people who use bluetooth headsets on ps3.

I actually use the microphone on my video camera (a Sony Handycam). I run the audio output into the line input on my computer. The quality is good (but obviously not professional), but it's a bit sensitive since it's not really designed for the purpose of audio only use.

I also have a Logitech mic, but I don't like it, because I've never got any kind of decent quality from it. I keep an old JVC mic around, too... but I don't even know if it works anymore.

Update to this: I bought a Turtle Beach Earforce X11 back in October. For anyone who heard me cohost back during Shocktober, I was using that.

Well, I bought a logitech headset for around 20 dollars, but it doesn't pick up my voice very well, so I'm using the one built into my laptop. It is much better than the one I bought which makes me sad face.

Actually, if you remember Tom, I have an aquatic mic! Deep sea sounds and heavy bass free of charge.

I got a new mic recently though, but I'll have to wait until I'm not traveling around / back in the comfort of my own home before I can actually use the bloody thing.

I use a headset I bought at Fry's Electonics.. It's an A4 Tech HS-5P Internet Headset. (I Googled it, sue me.) It's actually the second one I've bought. The first one had a rough life, but this one holds up. I'm told I sound good on the stream, so it's worth the cheap cost.

I'd rate it a 8/10. It loses 2 points because, for some reason I haven't solved yet, I get major feedback when trying to record Youtube videos. So much, I have to rig up something that's ridiculous to make them.

My Mic

Post by Hyp- » Mon Dec 06, 2010 10:01 pm

I use the Internal mic in my Dell Inspiron (IDT High-Def). If the Godly Windows 95 Mic-on-a-Stick is comparable to a .1 megapixel cellphone camera, and a professional mic is comparable to a professional camera, then my microphone would be comparable to an iPhone 4G's camera. It's not a professional camera, but it's a pretty darn good one that get's the job done exceptionally. It definitely is not crap though.

I'm using the built-in mic with my Asus laptop. It seems to do alright (no one in stream has complained that I sounded like I was underwater), though I wouldn't mind upgrading.
