NickServ Tutorial

Post by Foxtrot200 » Tue May 03, 2011 11:21 pm

This tutorial will guide you through the registration process for rizon.net where The TomBobBlender Show Community Chatroom is hosted. It will guide you through the steps for signing up with NickServ and identifying with NickServ.

What is NickServ?
NickServ is what is known as an IRC service. Basically it's a bot that runs on the server that changes the way the server works. In this case, NickServ creates an authentication system that allows you to register and keep a nick, so long as it's not inactive for 90 days. Think of it as the login and registration forms on most websites, but in IRC form!

Registering with NickServ
Registering with NickServ is actually VERY simple. Don't let all the text commands and features scare you!

NOTE: Typos are possible so PLEASE, and I can't stress this enough, do not use any NickServ commands in a channel or PM/Query window in case you accidentally typo the "/" character out of the beginning of your message.

First, you'll need to make sure you're using the nick you wish to register.
Type:

Code: Select all

/nick nickname-here
Where nickname-here is the nick you wish to use.

To register with NickServ all you need to do is change your nick to the username you'd like to register and issue the following command with the following syntax:

Code: Select all

/msg NickServ REGISTER password-here email-here
Where password-here is your desired password and email-here is your email address
(The email address MUST be valid as you will receive a confirmation code through it)

Shortly after doing this, you should receive an email from Rizon with instructions on how to confirm your nick. Follow the instructions and you'll be good to go.

Identifying with NickServ

If you're using the QWebIRC client on Tom's website, you can login from the start by choosing "NickServ" from the Auth list and entering your password in the password field.

If you're in another client, take the following steps:

When you connect to the server with your registered nick, in order to get all of the features associated with registered users, you must identify yourself with NickServ so it knows who you are. Think of it as logging in.

To identify with NickServ, make sure you are using the nick you registered and type the following command with the following syntax:

Code: Select all

/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password-here
Where password-here is the password you used to register your nick.

If you are unable to use your nick and you have already registered it, either someone is using your nick or you disconnected suddenly and the server hasn't pinged out the connection yet. To regain access to your nick, use the following command with the following syntax:

Code: Select all

/msg NickServ GHOST Nick password
Where Nick is the nick you wish to take back and password is the password used when registering that nick.

Do we have the server/channel information for this room? If it's the same one we used before, I'm getting a message saying the room is available by invitation only when I try to join.

It is the same info as before. We had a little error in our settings, but it's since been corrected.
